Many people are unaware of the excellent infrastructures in some of the National parks for the self drive enthusiast. ( Kruger for example is fantastic and many, many folk venture in their own vehicles and drive many kms in search of sightings
You do not need a 4x4 as a normal sedan is perfectly fine. The main roads are tarred and the secondary ones dirt.
Common sense will prevent you from falling into a dangerous encounter .If an elephant is angry, keep your distance, don’t get out the car except where permitted etc.
Many picnic areas are available with barbeque facilities in the park, and many have shops selling wood etc.
Nothing quite like a barbeque overlooking the Crocodile river with a herd of Elephants frolicking in the water nearby.
