The history of the estate on which the Mount Nelson is built goes back to 1741. Named The Garden of Oudtshoorn, it adjoined the Company's garden, and was granted to a young Dutch Baron Pieter van Rheede van Oudtshoorn, by the Governor of the Cape.

A portion was bought by the Cape Land Company in 1890 to its subsidiary, African Land and Hotels Limited, to build a hotel for the passengers of luxury mailships sailing to and from the Cape. On Wednesday, 1 March 1899, the Mount Nelson opened its doors The hotel offers 226 individually furnished bedrooms and suites, each offering the highest level of comfort, privacy and security in a garden environment at the historic heart of Cape Town.

The restaurants serve delicacies from upstyled Afro-fusion cuisine to informal poolside meals during the summer months. A delicious high tea is served daily on the famous Windsor table and an aperitif may be enjoyed in the elegant Lord Nelson Bar.
