Aquila takes its name from the rare Black Eagle that thrives in the area of approximately 2000
hectares of southern Karoo highlands. Proclaimed as a private game reserve in 1985 for its unique beauty,
Aquila boasts exquisite mountains, valley's, rivers and kloofs. Large herds of African wildlife such as Zebra,
Giraffe, black wildebeest, blue wildebeest, klipspringer, duiker, greybuck, and ostrich, as well as troupes of
baboon reside on the reserve.
If the timing is right, the elusive mountain leopard, whose tracks and left-over kills
appear regularly, can be spotted. An abundance of South Africa's totem animal, the springbok, and other antelope
species, such as gemsbok and steenbok spring along through the dry fynbos brush of the reserve in mass.
Rhino have also been introduced.
