Island Camp

There is something unique and special about Island Camp - a sense of adventure and timeless Africa. The adventure starts when you leave the civilized tarmac road at the Baringo Club Hotel. You then follow an unlikely and rocky track winding up to a headland parking spot. Here you leave your vehicle in the care of a camp askari. Grab your bag, hang on to your hat, and hop aboard a motorized canoe for the 20 minute boat ride to the island. The lake looks like mud, an unrelenting brown. The boat passes hippo - humps in the water or perhaps a pink yawning mouth and small eyes. There are several islands; your destination is Ol Kokwe, which means "place of rocks." You can see for great distances, and all around tower magnificent high hills and extinct valcanoes - ridge after ridge in dark, smoky tones of blue, purple, and grey, like and Oriental water color. In the middle of all this water it feels dry. And hot. You'll be pleased you brought a hat.

Accommodation

The tents have thatched shelters to help keep them cool and provide a shady veranda where you can sit on safari chairs and admire your view. Behind each tent is a solidly built functional bathroom with flush toilet and solar heated shower. To get there you must unzip your tent and open the bathroom door.
