Mara River Camp
Nestled at the foot of the Oloollo Escarpment and on the north west boundary of Kenya’s famous Masai Mara National Reserve,
on a beautiful forested bend of the majestic Mara River, is one of Kenya’s smallest and most charming tented lodges.
The Mara River Camp is homely and intimate with only 16 ensuite twin tents (camp size has been reduced and totally
renovated and upgraded in 1998); it is one of the few remaining traditional tented lodges.
The Masai Mara is without doubt one of Africa’s finest wildlife sanctuaries. The Mara supports the largest diversity of
species in Africa and, because of its incredible array of predators and their prey, is the best place to witness the tense
and dramatic interactions between these hunters and the hunted. The sight of a predator in action can never be forgotten.
The resident hippo of Mara River Camp have long ruled out any possibility of a swimming pool, while roaming herds of
bull Elephant have also put an end to any exotic gardens. However the indigenous shrubs are plentiful and the
surrounding trees house many beautiful birds. Only a few kilometres downstream the annual migration of the
Wildebeest and attendant Zebra and Antelope may be in full flow, as they run the gauntlet of the dangers of the Mara River.
Mara River Camp is favoured by naturalists, wildlife researchers, film crews, photographers and conservationists. Our resident ornithologists are always available for informative nature and bird walks in and around the immediate camp area. Being of Masai origin they delight guests with fascinating talks and discussions on the Masai culture. By being on the reserve boundary we have ideal access not only to the inner sanctums, where shyer species seek refuge, but also the outer grazing areas – where less aggressive species such as cheetah take advantage of ideal conditions created by the Masai cattle and grass fires.
Mara River Camp is a tented camp with a difference, it really does blend with the landscape and its wildlife.
Moreover the meals produced from the charcoal hearth kitchens are delicious and wholesome,
the staff and management are exceptionally friendly and the canvas tents have all the authenticity
of being ‘in the bush’ whilst providing all the luxurious facilities for a most comfortable stay.

We are lucky to have been blessed with many charming aspects – as one of the oldest lodges in the area we have
had years to perfect our winning combination of comfort in the heart of nature.
As a classic example of tourism in harmony with the environment, Mara River Camp works with foreign visitors
for the benefit of the surrounding ecosystem, the wildlife and the semi-nomadic Masai people, many of whom
are shareholders and directors of the company. Optional hot air ballooning and fishing for monstrous Nile Perch
on Lake Victoria area available on request.
