Taita Hills Lodge

You enter the Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary through the impressive Taita Hills Lodge. It is here that you check into all three lodges. The Taita Hills Lodge resembles a fortress and was built with sandbags of World War I cemented together to form the tall three-story ramparts. However, the rather stark outlines of the lodge are softened by dark green veils of creeper, and the walls enclose elegant public rooms leading to lawns, tropical gardens and a swimming pool. Once you enter the fortress, you find yourself in the spectacular two-story tall central room that is the heart of the lodge. Windows reaching from floor to ceiling give light and beautiful views of gardens and the plains beyond. Inside, there is harmony and creativity – a blending of African themes and natural materials. There are tables made with African drums, stone settees and carved panels and batiks of Masai life. The 60 guest rooms are uniform double rooms with twin beds and full en suite bathrooms. Weaver Bird woven rugs and fabrics give the rooms some bright coloured style. All rooms have a small balcony. Some look over the sanctuary plains with good views of wildlife or distant mountains. Lunch and dinner are served in the large Chala restaurant. In the evening there is often live music or entertainment by traditional dancers. The breakfast buffet is set up in a sunny room which looks over gardens and lawns on three sides and is reached by a rock pathway through the lovely central garden. Champagne breakfasts, barbeque lunches and elegant “Out of Africa” dinnerscan be arranged in the bush on request.
