About Port Elizabeth Scheduled Overland Tours
Known as the Friendly City, Port Elizabeth offers all the attractions of a major tourist centre and is an ideal base from which to explore the surrounding area and investigate its historic past. Inland the province is mainly agricultural land, reaching the Drakensberg Mountains in the west and touching the borders of the arid Karoo plains.
While enjoying the Eastern Cape's golden beaches and superb facilities for holidaymakers, it's easy to forget that this is an area with a history of strife and turmoil. The bitter frontier wars of the 19th century resulted in the Xhosa gradually losing more and more territory, while British settlement proceeded apace with the arrival of the '1820 settlers' - about 4 000 families who landed at the site of present day Port Elizabeth.
Between the Great Kei and Mtamvuna Rivers lies the Wild Coast of the Transkei area, with pleasant resort towns tucked away along the coastline. Here wilderness reigns supreme and the warm Indian Ocean laps a shoreline of infinite variety, with sandy coves, lagoons and estuaries, cliffs and rocky reefs.
Of the area's many nature reserves, special mention should be made of the Addo Elephant National Park, a home to Black Rhino, buffalo and antelope as well as more than 470 elephant. The Tsitsikamma National Park is another lovely conservancy, traversed by the popular Otter Walking Trail. The southern coast is famous for the Garden Route, one of South Africa's greatest tourist destinations. The Garden Route stretches about 300 km (186 miles) from Heidelberg between Swellendam and Riversdale to the Storms River Bridge in the vicinity of Tsitsikamma National Park. Blessed by breathtaking scenic beauty, verdant hills, placid lakes and glorious beaches offering enticing attractions for the hiker, rambler, sailor and surfer. The flowering season displays blooms in their millions, stretching out in lovely vistas of dazzling colour.
