Madikwe River Camp

Situated in the heart of "Groot Marico" country, Madikwe is an area rich in tradition and steeped in memories of the past.

Signs of the early San (or Bushmen) inhabitants can be seen in paintings on the walls of the now silent caves. One can almost hear the echoes of the early explorers' guns as they hunted across these plains on their journey north.

Madikwe River Lodge lies on the banks of the Marico River, shaded by indigenous forest and overhanging a natural pool. The thatched lodge accommodates 32 guests and consists of a central entertainment area extended by rustic wooden decks overlooking the river. The lodge is proud to offer you the complete African adventure here in the Madikwe wilderness.

Experienced rangers will take you into the bush on dawn and dusk safaris, or on walks through the Madikwe wilderness. There you will discover the mystery of the African bushveld, observe the Big Five and a host of other wild animals, and enjoy a rich and varied birdlife.

About Madikwe Game Reserve

The establishment and development of the 60 000 ha Madikwe Game Reserve is, without doubt, the single biggest and most significant achievement of the North-West Parks Board.

The reserve was announced to the public in August 1991 and officially became part of the Board's estate.

Currently one of South Africa's largest game reserves, Madikwe has the distinction of being one of the few game reserves in the world to be proclaimed purely on the grounds of being the most appropriate and sustainable land use for an area.

Currently one of South Africa's largest game reserves, Madikwe has the distinction of being one of the few game reserves in the world to be proclaimed purely on the grounds of being the most appropriate and sustainable land use for an area The reserve consists of vast plains of open woodlands and grasslands, dissected by the rugged Rant van Tweedepoort, and bordered in the south by the Dwarsberg Mountains.

The area is dotted with huge rocky hills or inselbergs. The entire reserve has been enclosed in a 150 kilometres perimeter fence, which has been electrified to prevent the escape of elephants and the larger predators. A number of commercial safari companies operate within the reserve including Tau Game Lodge, Madikwe Game Lodge, Jaci's Safari Camp as well as a number of corporate or syndicated lodges. The reserve also has further commercial tenders open that should continue to develop the reserve.
